THCV FAQ - Tetrahydrocannabivarin Guide

Frequently Asked Questions About THCV (Tetrahydrocannabivarin)

What is THCV?

THCV (tetrahydrocannabivarin) is a naturally occurring cannabinoid found in cannabis and hemp plants. It's structurally similar to THC but has distinct properties and effects. THCV starts out as CBDV in the plant, and converts to THCV for full effects.

How is THCV different from THC?

While THCV and THC share a similar molecular structure, they interact differently with the body's endocannabinoid system. THCV has a shorter duration of effects and different receptor interactions compared to traditional THC. Most importantly, THCV is not intoxicating. You will not get high from THCV. Period.

What are the potential benefits of Delta-9 THCV?

Research on THCV is still emerging, but preliminary studies suggest that Delta-9 THCV may support appetite regulation, blood sugar management, energy levels, and focus. However, more research is needed to fully understand its effects and potential benefits. Here are two important THCV clinical studies from the National Institutes of Health we encourage you to check out:

The role of tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) in metabolic disorders: A promising cannabinoid for diabetes and weight management (March 2025)

Abstract Snippet:
Preclinical studies demonstrated that THCV improves insulin sensitivity, promotes glucose uptake, and restores insulin signaling in metabolic tissues. Additionally, THCV reduces lipid accumulation and improves the mitochondrial activity in adipocytes and hepatocytes, shown through both cell-based and animal research.

Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV): a commentary on potential therapeutic benefit for the management of obesity and diabetes (January 2020)

Abstract Snippet:
The main advantage of THCV over THC is the lack of psychoactive effects. In rodent studies, THCV decreases appetite, increases satiety, and up-regulates energy metabolism, making it a clinically useful remedy for weight loss and management of obesity and type 2 diabetic patients.

Are Delta-8 THCV and Delta-9 THCV the same?

No, Delta-9 THCV is not the same as Delta-8 THCV. Only Delta-9 THCV has the beneficial effects associated with THCV (read above for the science!). Forge Hemp THCV product use only genuine Delta-9 THCV in our THCV Chewable Tablets.

Why do some companies blend THCV into THC Vapes?

Great question, we've been asking ourselves that, too. They're likely taking advantage of consumers' lack of knowledge about THCV and marketing it as a novel form of THC. Ironically, as the above studies point out, THCV is a THC antagonist. This means THCV mixed into THC vapes will produce a less-potent high.

Is THCV legal?

Although THCV is non-intoxicating and has promise as a therapeutic options for obesity and diabetes, it suffers discrimination because of its name. Lawmakers see "THC" and assume it's intoxicating, when in fact it has the opposite effect. The legal status of THCV varies by jurisdiction. Hemp-derived THCV products containing less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC are still federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill, but state laws may vary.

How do I use THCV products?

Forge Hemp THCV Chewable Tablets are made specifically to use throughout the day, when you need them. Other brands' products offer one large daily dose of THCV (and other cannabinoids). We found that smaller amounts of THCV -- in the morning, before lunch, and again in the afternoon -- was most effective. We formulated each of our tablets with 10mg pure Delta-9 THCV to be infinitely flexible.

Start with a low dose and gradually increase as needed. We recommend you consult with a healthcare professional to discuss adding THCV to your care plan (share the above links to the National Institutes of Health articles if they're unfamiliar with THCV).

Are there any side effects?

As with any cannabinoid product, individual responses may vary. Some users report mild side effects such as dry mouth or drowsiness. Start with small amounts to assess your tolerance.

Can THCV show up on a drug test?

If you're subject to drug testing, consult with your employer or testing facility before using any cannabinoid products.

How should I store THCV products?

Store THCV products in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep products in their original packaging and away from children and pets.
