Whole Mushrooms vs. Extracts
Why Forge Chose Whole Lion's Mane
One of the first questions we hear about our Lion's Mane Turmeric Chai is: "Why didn't you use an extract?"
It's a great question.
The truth is, whole mushrooms and mushroom extracts each have their place. We chose whole mushrooms because they best fit the product we wanted to make and the philosophy that has guided Forge since 2019.
Understanding the difference can help you decide which approach is right for you.
What Is a Whole Mushroom Product?
Whole mushroom products begin with the mushroom itself.
After harvest, the mushroom is carefully dried and finely milled into a powder, preserving the complete fruiting body. Because many naturally occurring mushroom compounds are water soluble, whole mushroom powders are typically brewed or steeped in hot water before drinking.
That's exactly how our Lion's Mane Turmeric Chai is designed to be enjoyed.
Each serving contains:
- 1,000 mg Colorado-grown whole Lion's Mane
- Organic turmeric
- Organic ginger
- Cardamom
- Cinnamon
- Nutmeg
- Cloves
No proprietary blends. No hidden ingredient amounts. Just real ingredients.
What Is a Mushroom Extract?
Extracts begin with mushrooms but undergo additional processing to concentrate selected compounds. The resulting powder is designed to dissolve easily into beverages like coffee, smoothies, or shakes.
This convenience is one reason extracts have become popular in the functional mushroom category.
Like many food ingredients, extracts can vary in how they're produced and how they're labeled. Depending on the brand, you may see different extraction methods, different standardization practices, and varying levels of transparency about ingredient amounts.
Why Forge Chose Whole Mushrooms
When we created our first non-hemp product, convenience wasn't our only consideration.
We wanted something that reflected the same principles that built Forge Hemp:
- Use real ingredients.
- Use meaningful amounts.
- Be transparent.
- Offer honest value.
Whole mushrooms fit that philosophy.
Rather than relying on a proprietary blend, we tell you exactly what's in every serving.
Rather than using an instant powder, we created a tea that's brewed the traditional way—with hot water, time, and real ingredients.
Does That Mean Extracts Are Bad?
Not at all.
Extracts are convenient and can be a good choice for people who want to quickly add mushrooms to coffee, smoothies, or other recipes.
Whole mushrooms simply offer a different experience.
If you enjoy brewing a cup of tea, appreciate recognizable ingredients, and value knowing exactly what you're getting, a whole mushroom product may be the better fit.
There isn't one "right" answer. There are simply different approaches.
Why Doesn't Everything Dissolve?
Because it's real food.
Whole mushrooms and traditional chai spices don't completely dissolve like instant drink mixes.
Some people enjoy the tea just as it is. Others use a French press or tea infuser for a smoother cup. And a few of us swirl the last sip together and finish everything in one gulp.
Around here, we call that Cowboy Style.
Why We Think It Matters
When Kelly founded Forge Hemp, she wasn't trying to create another CBD company.
She wanted to create wellness products with enough of the ingredients that mattered to make a meaningful difference.
Years later, we brought that same philosophy to mushrooms.
Different ingredients. Same Forge philosophy.
