Some researchers and herbal practitioners include Lion's Mane among adaptogenic mushrooms, while others reserve the term for mushrooms such as Reishi and Cordyceps.

Definitions vary, which is why you'll see Lion's Mane described both ways.

Hericenones are naturally occurring compounds found primarily in the fruiting body of Lion's Mane.

Researchers continue studying these compounds because of their potential relationship with nerve growth factor (NGF)—a naturally occurring protein involved in the growth, maintenance, and survival of nerve cells.

Erinacines (air-IN-uh-seens)

Erinacines are a related family of compounds found primarily in Lion's Mane mycelium, the underground network of thread-like structures that supports mushroom growth.

Like hericenones, erinacines are being studied for their biological activity and their potential relationship with nerve growth factor.

Researchers continue investigating both groups of compounds to better understand how they function individually—and together.
